Penny didn't last long in the completely conscious world before slipping into a morphine-induced sleep, eyes finally sliding and staying shut for an extended period of time.
When she awoke, her eyes focused in on a couple of things, first they settled on her dejected looking, cut-off pantleg. She swore, and stared at the wrappings around her ankle, before finally settling on a small care package of painkillers, antibiotics, and crutches placed at the end of her bed.
Flix had done all this.
And she didn't even have a chance to thank him.
Her hand covered her mouth and she sat there quietly on the own for a minute, before tears started streaming down her face. He had been so kind as to take her to the doctor, listen to her intoxicated ramblings, and all he did for her was help her out. No strings attached.
It made her realize - she wanted strings attached. No one had ever treated her this way. She was always the one to do these kinds of things. He was absolutely amazing, and she wanted more of that, with the added bonus of knowing that she was the only one.
"Shit." She rubbed at her eyes, trying to keep herself from sobbing, but soon she was a wet sloppy mess. Bruce trotted over to the bed and climbed up on top of it, putting his head in her lap in a consoling way. Flix had even let her companion out of his pokeball for her. She sobbed harder.
She had fallen in love with her partner, and it fucking hurt to know that he probably only saw her as a friend.
Her jaw tightens, and she feels her nails press into her palms as he stands there, glaring right back at her like she means absolutely nothing to him. Her heart aches, but at the same time, she's so fucking angry she can't really think straight.
If he didn't have anything to say to her that would apologize for him being gone for six whole fucking months, then she was done. Completely done. She had tried in the past to forgive him for disappearing, she had loved him. But now all she felt for the person standing in front of her was hurt, anger, and dislike for who he was turning out to be.
"I can't believe you did this to me. Again. And yes, I am a good Ranger." She said indignantly, clenching her hands tighter as she glared at him. "But my name was also on the lease." She pointed to his face and glares at him angrily.
"I lived here, with you. You left. I can't fucking believe you left, but you did. Was I really that awful? I treated you like fucking gold. Or did you want to be treated like dirt?" She swallowed hard and drew her hand back to her chest, folding her arms across it.
"I loved you, and you fucking spit it in my face and bailed on everything. I will NEVER forgive you." She pulled out her phone and sent a quick text, asking to be picked up by one of the rangers that had told her she had business nearby and would be able to drive her back to Goldenrod later on.
"I wasn't expecting you to even be here, I don't have some sort of stupid speech prepared or anything." She tossed her phone back into her purse angrily and ran her hands along her face and into her hair, before tucking her fingers behind her neck, locking them there, cupping the nape.
"I'm just so... Disappointed." She looked at him sadly and turned away, heading towards the door. "I thought you could do better, but you're just a fucking coward, Elijah. Have fun ruining your life." She opened the door and looked back at him, feeling her tears well up. She couldn't take this. She thought she would be able to yell and argue with him like they used to when he would go away for months on end, but this time was different.
This time she couldn't stop herself from crying. That meant it was over.
Penny couldn't remember the series of clicks and blips that had her winding up in her own bed, snuggling into the sheets as if they were the best feeling sheets in the whole goddamn world. She was so happy that Flix had a key.
Reaching upwards without really opening her eyes, she grabbed Flix's arm and tugged him down onto the bed, pressing her face into his chest and breathing in the scent he normally produced. He always smelled good. Like outdoors, and smoke. It was nice.
After inhaling a decent amount of his scent, she went back to just cuddling him and holding herself as close as she possibly could. Her fingers tightened on the fabric of his shirt and she fell back into sleep quickly enough.
After a few seconds of sleeping, she would wake up, mumble something, and go back to sleep again, like her body was trying to fight her on her needs. 'Mmm, Flix, you're so nice? How am I so lucky to have a nice partner? You're the best. I could just kiss you." Penny squeaked and rolled over in the bed, but pulled his arms around herself, snuggling in tight to him.
"Mm, nice." She mumble before fallign back asleep, hopefully for good this time.
Penelope reached out with her arms as he picked her up, wrapping them around his neck loosely. Her eyes fluttered open and shut as her consciousness came and left her just as abruptly. She nodded as best she could, which just made her head fall bad and thunk against his shoulder.
She gave a goofy grin at the feeling of his shoulder behind her head, thinking about how it was pretty large and muscular, not having really given it much thought before now. She had seen him shirtless... Her mind reverted back to that moment and she sighed happily, pressing her cheek into his chest.
"Home now, bedtime. Nappy naps." She sighed softly, snuggling closer to him in his arms. He felt warmer than normal, although she didn't make it a habit of cuddling this close and personal... He did hug her frequently when she would let him.
"Nurse, nurse. Joy." Penny tried to raised her head. "I think my dear Flix has a fever, he's so warm! Can you give him some miracle juice?" She waved a hand absently, gesturing to herself. 'It made me all better, maybe Flix needs some." She nodded.
Nurse Joy just laughed at Penny and went to walk out of the room, leaving them alone. "Wow she just left, just like that. Didn't even say goodbye. What a bitch." Penny stuck her tongue out at nothing in particular, before reaching up and patting Flix's cheeks.
Penelope stroked her hand over Flix's again, feeling the rough callouses of working outside and being constantly camping and rough necking it. She smiled and let her head hang back, watching him curiously as he turned around. "You have nice hands. Big." Penny mumbled softly, before moving to sit up. "Rough and manly." She swayed awkwardly as she sat up, eyes rolling back.
A couple of Joy's grabbed her arms to steady her, and hoisted her up onto Flix's back, although it was hard for Penny to hold on, so they had to drag her arms around the front of the taller man and hitch them together, pulling Flix's hands up to hold Penny in place. The way that they helped her loop her legs around him made it so they connected and locked by her feet.
When he went to stand up, though, Penelope nearly fell off straight away, her body finally giving in to the medication they had pumped into her. She flopped back and let her mouth hang open slightly in her sleep, drool building up a little in the corner of her mouth.
"You're going to have to carry her in front of you." One of the nurses said, while the others left the room. "We'll have some pain killers ready when you come back for the crutches." She smiled at Flix, patting his shoulder. "Good luck with her, she's always been a handful."
Penelope tossed her head this way and that, before rolling it all around on the pillow, humming some sort of weird mash-up of a bunch of different songs as the other people in the room spoke aloud about her recovery time.
"If she's good about it, and stays off it for the next couple of weeks, she can be back into working order as early as 14 days, I'd say." One of the Joy's smiled at Flix and patted his arm comfortingly, before looking over to Penny, who was now itching her stomach and rolling around on the bed. Being high really didn't suit her.
By the time she felt settled in the bed, her butt was sticking up in the air, the sheet still covering all the important parts, but not by very much. The Joy's were struggling to keep her covered, but by the end of it all, they had just given up and put her pants back on for her, cutting off one of the legs at the knee so that they would fit over her swollen ankle.
"Awwwwh, Flix..." She tugged on Flix's shirt and looked up at him sadly. "They broke my pants, why did they break my pants?" She looked down at the sliced off pantleg and played with the edge of the freyed area, before taking Flix's hand tightly in her own.
"Sad pant day." She saluted the loss of the pants and flopped back over, still holding onto his hand. "Will you take me home, Flix? I won't squirm I promise." She pouted at him and raised her arm to wrap around him if he chose to pick her up or not.
Penelope couldn't stand it anymore. She had taken a couple of days off to clear her head, and found herself standing outside the house that Elijah and her had one shared for a very few - although amazing - months. She glared at it, wondering what exactly she had seen in it. The charm was gone, and now it only carried hollow memories that dug into her heart like a garden spade and made her hate herself.
"Fucking... Bullshit." She huffed, before perking up as someone came walking along. The footsteps were heavy, but lazy, and it didn't take long before she could see the person coming around the corner.
Elijah. Fucking Elijah Castaire was walking up to the house like it had been sitting there, waiting for him all this time, even though she hadn't been.
Her fists clenched and she watched him step into the house, wander around a bit, and then flop down, disturbing dust as he did. The light through the window made it easy to see everything as he just sat there, and she couldn't help herself.
Her feet had already carried her to the door, and she flung it open and stormed into the living room, grabbing the closest thing she could find - an old newspaper she had been reading the day he up and left - hitting him right across the face with it.
"You piece of shit!" She couldn't help the anger that swelled in her. "You piece of fucking human garbage."
Honestly, Penny was already feeling vulnerable and prodded enough without the feeling of needles being stuck in her skin to numb the area and drain some of the fluid that was building up in the sprained area.
When Flix spoke, she sighed softly and let her head flop to the side while they pumped her up with a bit of morphine to get her to calm down and stop tensing the muscles all over her body.
Her eyeslids fluttered and she rolled her head around, trying to keep her eyes focused on something so they would stop rolling back in her head. "Woah." She thought she had whispered, but by the way the nurses jumped at the word, she knew she had shouted. "Sorry." She said quieter, and one of the nurses just laughed.
Penelope didn't know why the nurse was laughing, but it made her laugh too, bursting out into a fit of uncontrollable giggles that shook her body. They only stopped when she had giggled too much and it turned into coughing.
"Ahhhh, weird." She smacked her lips and looked around the room, as if she oculd magically apparate a bottle of water into her hand. "Accio, agua!" She commanded loudly, holding her hand in the air. When none came, she pouted as if her world had just been destroyed.
"I guess I know for sure I'm not a wizard, now." She flopped back onto the bed again, giving off her best Hagrid voice. "Yer... Yer a wizard, 'arry!" She burst out into giggles again.
The nurses rolled their eyes at her and looked to Flix, raising their eyebrows. "She'll need bedrest. She'll have crutches, and she can probably work, as long as it's desk work and she's not out running around getting herself shot." One of the nurses explained.
"I definitely never want to be shot again!" Penny chirped, laughing at herself. "It hurts, a lot!" She explained, as if it wasn't obviously. "See?" She pulled up her shirt to just below her breast, pointing out a jagged, ripped-up scar where a bullet had obviously enter her body. There were other scars all over her stomach and sides, and most likely her back.
"Yes, Penny. We know. But remember, you told us not to tell anyone." The nurse pulled her shirt back down and glanced to Flix. Penelope shrugged.
"Flix is cool, he's like my closest person. He's my person." Penny give Flix a thumbs up and winked at him.
When Flix was allowed beyond the little door barrier that had been separating them, Penelope smiled brightly and flopped down onto the table they provided, popping her leg up as they stripped her from the waist down behind a little curtain and gave her a little blanket to cover herself with.
When the blanket and curtain were pulled back, it revealed a large purple bruise wrapping its way around her entire ankle, swelling, and looking generally hurt. Trying to walk on it seemed like a medical miracle at this point, just furthering the proof that Penny was a trooper when it came to injuries.
"Hey, that looks pretty bad." She mumbled, leaning forward to touch it. Her legs flexed awkwardly at the angle she had to bend to touch it, before wincing when the flesh she poked was gelatinous and sore. "Ouch." She mumbled.
One nurse swatted her hand away from it, before taking a couple of pictures and inserting a pain killer right into the flesh. Penny hissed and sucked in her top lip, pouting at the pain. Needles were one thing she really couldn't stand.
"Jesus, you gonna warn me next time, or just amputate the damn leg?" She snapped at the Joy, who looked up at her, blinking. Penny frowned and slumped back onto the bed, pouting and staring at the wall angrily.
Penny grinned when he just scooped her up like she was thin air. She had seen him carry a lot before, but now that it was her... It seemed infinitely more attractive of a quality, to be honest. She felt her face grow hot at the thoughts that filled her head for a moment, before shaking them free. Yeah right, Flix would never be interested in someone like her.
She laughed as he kicked open the door to the pokemon center and yelled at the nurses, watching as a couple of nurse joy came to check her out and pull her off into another room.
Penny didn't really want to be separated from Flix at the moment, but the nurses seemed adamant that they needed to do their work in private, without interference.
They must have known Flix as a regular, because they looked right at him when they said it. "Ah, actually. I'd be more comfortable if my partner was there." Penny mumbled quietly to one of the Joy's, who wrinkled her nose as if she had just smelled something foul.
"He'll be quiet, I swear. Right, Flix?" Penny looked over at Flix and pouted at him, giving him the same puppy dog eyes that Bruce did when he wanted a treat. So that's where he learned it from.
Once the pain actually set in and she could really feel the effects of what was happening to her ankle, she looked down at it and tried to put some weight on it, wincing. "... Awh, damnit." She frowned and tried again, nearly winding up on her face. "Yeah, no. I should proably get this checked out." She lifted her leg and balanced on the one she had on the ground, tugging down her sock to check out her ankle.
It was already turning a dark shade of purple.
"... Arceus doesn't want me to have fun, it's been decided." She feined being exasperated, head falling back as if her life was over, before grumbling and pulling her sock back up. "Here, help me get my shoe off." She untied the laces and pulled the boot off her foot, tossing it on the ground.
"I should be able to walk to the center, now." She gave him a thumbs up and went to move again, the pain shooting up her leg and making her freeeze in her spot, before slowly careening over.
"This is the end, this is it for me." She stared up to the sky. "Going out with a broken ankle, oh cruel world..." She griped loudly, obnoxiously to the rest of the street, some people stopping to watch her little spectacle before she waved them off.
"I hurt my ankle! Go away! Nothing to see!" She laughed at herself, before looking at Flix. "Well, looks like you're going to have to carry me to the center, partner."
Penny nodded her head in a wise way, as thought what he was saying about the fossil type pokemon was so true and old-age knowledge. She let her hand drop back down, free of her pocket, before glancing over to him,
"You are so right, I hate how there are no fire fossil types." Penny frowned a bit at the thought. She wondered why for a moment. "Maybe there's a reason, though. Maybe fire types weren't even needed or even existed back then." Penny mumbled, moreso to herself. Now she was curious. How did the evolution of fire types come to be?
"Mm!" She jolted as she went to take another step, but instead found her foot catching a small step in the middle of the street, teetering forward. She grabbed onto the closest thing she could find - Flix's hand - to steady herself, before breathing out, relieved.
"Damnit, who puts a random step in the middle of the sidewalk?!" She frowned and pointed to it with her free hand, still having a grip on Flix's hand as she kept on walking. "Seriously... How stupid can you be..." She continued walking for a few seconds before letting go of his hand and sighing loudly.
"Oh. I have a lot of... comedy novels. And, uh. Romance." She let the last one slip by quiet, before rolling her eyes. "Y'know. Books that get turned into chick flicks, basically. They're a quick and easy read." She shrugged her shoulders.
Penny grinned as his fingers made an explosion, before mimicking him in the motion. She had forgot about that little part at the end. The explosion made it the best part. "You read up on it all, then?" She laughed at him as she walked, wondering why he had reached out randomly before retracting his hand. Was he going to grab hers? She blushed and tucked them into her pockets gently, before glancing around at the street around them.
"Mmm, they did have some nice stuff in there. My mom had a pair of pearl earrings from there, actually." She smiled at the memory, before shrugging her shoulders. "Dad probably has them somewhere at the ma-" She paused. "House." Penny had almost blabbered about the Reed manor, which would squander her hard work. She didn't want anyone but the commissioner to know about any of that...
If Flix went digging about her, though, there was no stopping him from discovering all the police files on her mother's murder, how the little Reed girl was found at the scene, terrified and alone and clinging to the lifeless body.
Penny shook the look of concentration from her face, trying to forget what she had been thinking about. "Why don't we pick up a couple of pamphlets to read later?" Penny tilted her head at him. "I mean, the ones that you don't already have. Perhaps they have a couple of books there to purchase..." She raised her index finger to her chin, tapping her knuckle against her lips.
"I've been looking for some new books, it'd be nice if they weren't just the usual stuff I've been reading..." She mumbled, thinking about the dozens of romance novels she had gone through in the past few months. What could she say? She was feeling... romantic.
Penny, although much shorter than her partner, was also spry and agile. It came with months and months of training to run, but when he practically galloped off, she was hot on his heels, trying not to pass him the few times. He was just so excited to be doing this... She hoped he could be promoted soon, so that he could delegate the boring tasks to his charges and he could be doing what he does best - which was apparently kicking in the doors to the shops.
Penny put her arm out to bar him from getting ahead of her, before stepping into the store, walking quietly up to the counter and raising her eyebrows. It didn't take much for men to admit their guilt to her, even when she wasn't working. She just had that look that hit them right in the soul.
Within seconds, the owner was sweating and trying to apologize, making excuses about his wife and family. Penny shook her head and pulled out her cuffs, wrapping them around his wrists. She didn't even have to say a word to him, he just sobbed to her as she pushed him out of the store and into a car that was awaiting the man to take him back to HQ.
"That was easier than I thought." Penny put her hands on her hips as she watched the car drive off, holding up her fist for him to bump. "Good job, Flix. Thanks for spotting them on the camera... The owner gave the location of the other employee that was involved, so the team in Azalea is going to handle it." She looked up to him and gave him a smile.
Penny raised her arms to the ceiling to stretch out a couple of kinks her in back, before bending down and touching her toes. She needed to limber up a bit if she was going to be chasing down any runners today; jewellery thieves always seemed to run, and she had found that out the hard way, straining a hammy on one of her solo missions during training.
"Mmm, I'm not sure if I'll go for commissioner, now." She mumbled, running her fingers through her hair to tie it up into a ponytail as she walked. "It might be nice, but at the same time, I wouldn't be able to be partners with you anymore." She reached out and patted his chest, giving him a thumbs up before opening the door to the outside world, taking in the sunshine.
"It's great that it's only 11, gives me basically the whole day... It's like having an extra day to my weekend off." Penelope waggled her eyebrows at him excitedly before bouncing down the stairs two at a time. If she was being honest, she really couldn't stop thinking about the fossil exhibit at the museum now. Or going there with Flix.
The mere thought, however subconscious it was, made her feet move swifter than usual on the way to the store, which was only a few blocks away. "Let's get this guy, and go to that museum." She pulled on her uniform gloves, making sure she had all her equipment on her for an arrest.
