When he asked her to go to the museum to look at fossils, Penny nodded absently to him, tapping the pen against her lips while she looked her footage over. "Mm, that sounds nice, Flix. Let's do that." She soothed, speaking softly, but obviously her mind was somewhere else as she looked over the footage. One person kept walking by the display case... Every hour.
Penny blinked, listening to Flix whine and moan about how the cafeteria staff didn't like him, how she didn't put a lot of pepperoni on his pizza... Penelope's eye twitched, and she was about to whip around and tell him how important her job was to her, and how he should take all police work more seriously, when he stopped mid-spin and started screaming at the screen about a face.
Pausing her own screen on the man who kept walking by the cases, she rolled her chair back over to his and bumped him out of the way, hoping it would entertain him for the time being while she looked over the person he was seeing.
"I'm pretty sure I'm right, then." Penelope stood up and pointed to the screen. "That guy works there. I think they staged the robbery to claim insurance." Penny rolled her eyes and rubbed at her forehead. "Ridiculous. Why are people so stupid? They have cameras." She rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying not to stress over it.
"Anyway, let's head down there and grab the guy." Penelope pulled on her Ranger jacket and brushed it off, zippering it up to her sternum. "Then we can write the report and be done with work today."
Penny glanced up as the door slid open, and in waltzed Flix with his usual armada of treats and candies. She raised her eyebrows at him at the same time that Bruce, who had been sleeping on the couch in the far side of the room, perked his head up to sniff him. He had grown used to Flix, and Penny could tell that her pokemon all liked her partner.
Getting up, Bruce walked over to Flix and pawed at his foot, opening his mouth for a bite of some sort of treat. "Don't you dare give him pizza again, he didn't stop farting for a week, the last time." Penny warned, not even looking up from her work now. She just knew these things. Bruce whined and jumped up, putting his paws on Flix's chest, giving him big old puppy dog eyes, before lowering himself back down and going back to his couch of solace.
"Thanks for the snacks." She grabbed a box of milk duds and poured them all into her mouth, letting them heat up and melt in the saliva she accumulated just thinking about the sweet treats. "Your screen is that one right there... I'm almost done tape 36, so you can start at.... 50? I think we should be caught up after that..." She paused the video feed to look everything over on her notes.
"There's a tape missing, so I was thinking once we look through all these we can go down to the shop and ask if they actually have it, if there's nothing on these ones." Penelope leaned back and looked over her shoulder at him. "I have a bit of a hunch as to what happened, but we still need to look through everything to make sure I'm right." Penny placed the notepad down and stood up, stretching out again.
"I could use some coffee." She mumbled softly, before grabbing a bag of the instant brand and setting up the kettle to boil some water. "I've been here since seven, just trying to get the work done so we can get out early."
Penny couldn't have been more embarrassed if she tried. Showing weaknesses was not something she was good at, especially on a first mission with someone she didn't even know would wind up being assigned to be her permanent partner.
The rest of the mission had gone amazingly, though. Penelope had helped Flix set up his tent like hers so that it would be sheltered, and even offered him some of her spare blankets until his had dried out.
The observation went swimmingly, and they were able to make four arrests in the time that they spent together in the forest. She couldn't really dent that they were a really good team, and they worked well together. Even the commissioner had pointed it out when they got assigned as a permanent team.
So after a few local missions together, and things moving and progression rather nicely, Penelope was sure that things would be working smoothly from now on.
Today was a simple one; they had to look over tapes of security footage and try and find out who had stolen a bunch of jewels from a local shop. Penelope, being a keen worker, had arrived early and was already through a couple of tapes, taking jot notes and collecting data on everyone who was around the area. She even noted any small blips or flickers in the camera's quality.
"Haaaa, this is tiring..." She stretched out and cracked a couple of joints, before getting back to it, leaning in close while she took down free-hand notes on a pad of paper in front of her.
Penny sighed softly and watched Flix snuggle into her blankets, sniffing them and just generally being cute. This guy must have been really clueless. She blushed furiously when he asked her to cuddle, and flopped into her own little niche, staring at the back of his head.
She only noticed now the different shades of red that streaked through his locks, and the way it stuck up at the nape of his neck... Shit, did he smell like rain? She found her eyes drifting closed and she mumbled something incoherent before falling asleep.
A few moments, or maybe hours, later, she woke up to the feeling of arms around her. Her eyes flung open, but she didn't move, staring at the bare chest of the man who was now cuddled up to her like they were some sort of lover pair.
"W-what..." She whispered to herself. How did this even happen? How did she not wake up? Her heart pounded in her ears as her lungs struggled to take gentle breaths,
She could feel Bruce behind her, pushing her closer into the man, and she began to feel dizzy from the blood rushing to her face. "Bruce, you traitor..." She whispered silently, before settling herself as much as she could. It wasn't that bad... Cuddling, at least. She sighed and rested her cheek against the arm that was under her head, before closing her eyes again.
Penny's eyes fluttered open when she heard the noise inside her shelter. Blushing furiously at being woken up abruptly, she listened closely before hearing Flix's voice. He was worried about his charizard at first, and once she heard the familiar sound of a pokeball, she sighed softly and pushed herself out of her blankets.
When she opened the door to her tent, she couldn't help but feel bad for Flix. He looked like a drowned rattata, and he also looked... cold.
"Shit." She whispered, ducking back into her tent to put on some boots and a raincoat. She ran out and grabbed his stuff from the rain quickly, before tucking it under her shelter and taking everything out to dry, the books, clothes, food, everything. She pinned it all up with clothespins on a string and went to Flix next, motioning for him to get undressed, before handing him. a pair of spare Pyjama pants she had.
Of course they would be a little short on him, but at least he would have something until his clothes dried up. "Here." She mumbled, turning around so that she wouldn't really see anything inappropriate. Once he had handed her all his wet clothing, she hung it all up on the line, before pointing to the tent, where Bruce was waiting at the door, looking worriedly at the two of them.
"Get in, the sleeping bag should be big enough to cover the both of us." She mumbled quietly, following him into the small tent. It was big enough for the two of them, and Bruce fit comfortably inside along with them.
Crawling under the sheets, she looked away and blushed, but pulled them up to let him in. "G-get in." She fumbled, before looking over at him. "You're going to get hypothermia!" She scolded.
Penelope glanced over to him and tilted her head, eyeing him up and down when he made his comments about what he could do. Judging by the way that he could climb a tree, he was nimble, athletic, and seemed like he was pretty good at things that involved working out. She bit her lip slightly at the double-euphemism that she could have tacked onto his phrase, but she shook her head and laughed at him instead.
"Right. Maybe someday..." She mused, before putting a lid on the pot to pour the hot water out. She would probably use it to flavour something tomorrow if she were at home. But today she just dumped the water out into a safe area away from the tents. The trees could have it.
Once she had fed her companion and washed up after eating, she bid her newfound friend farewell and tucked herself into her tent, snuggling into the sleeping bag, with her onesie pyjamas, fuzzy socks, and plethora of cozy blankets, along with Bruce, who laid down dutifully facing the door, but still relaxed.
"Goodnight!" She called out to Flix, before closing her eyes to sleep. The world got hazy pretty fast, she didn't even hear the rain start...
When he pursed his lips, Penny let out a small chuckled, admiring his determination to convince her that he would be great sleeping in the rain. It was the same kind of determination that would probably keep him stubborn enough to stalemate an abjuction. Provided they didn't know his weak spots, Flix could probably take secrets to the grave.
She briefly wondered how he did on his interrogation tests. They had made the simulations pretty serious and realtistic... She had even gotten a scar from hers. They were ruthless with her because she signed the waiver saying they could be.
"Mmm, I'll make you some pasta, first." She whistled for Bruce, who came trotting out of the tent to light the bunsen, before plopping a pot down onto it. She poured a bit of bottled water into the pot and waited for it to boil before pouring some rotini in, humming all the while.
"Spooky stories? Maybe if I wake up. I'm a light sleeper, so it'll probably happen at least once." She stared at the pasta while it cooked, before looking up and him, laughing slightly at his circus trick suggestion.
"No need, the company is enough entertainment, really." Penelope was always one to reassure people, even if they hated her guts. Having a sound mind was good for missions.
Penny sighed softly and ran her fingers through her hair as he chastized her for putting up tarps to keep the rain away, and her things dry as a bone. Clearly Flix hadn't looked at the weather predictions for the next few days like she had... Plus she could smell it in the air; the rain was always something she was in-tune with.
"Right, well. When you're drowning out here with no fire to keep you company, I hope you remember that." She grinned sheepishly and patted her hands together, crawling into her tent for a moment to set up. She came fully prepared with thermal blankets and PJ's, a large sleeping bag stuffed with fuzzy blankets, and some really nice, cozy, fluffy socks. Not that she would show those off.
"Were you going to try something?" She called out from her tent, laughing slightly at the thought. "Putting the moves on your partner, probably not the best idea." She emerged from the tent in a coat, readying herself for the nightfall. "I'm glad you're my partner, too. Doesn't feel like I'll go hungry or bored." She laughed awkwardly. No one had really wanted to be her partner, to be honest.
"And no, I don't really sing... I dance, classical latin and ballroom. Other than that, I am not very good at much else pertaining to parlour entertainment." Penny poked at the ground with the dull end of her sharp stick, saving the good end in case she was going to roast another marshmallow.
"I'm probably going to get to sleep early. Couple of hours. I tend to get tired once the night falls, anyway." Penny shrugged her shoulders. She was a light sleeper, so she tried to go to bed as early as possible so that if she did wake up in the middle of the night, she could just do something to help her go back to sleep.
"I wouldn't mind being a commissioner." Penelope thought about the premise of being in charge for a moment. It was a lot of desk work, though... "Although a commander sounds more like field-work..." Now she didn't know what she wanted out of her job.
Penelope watched as Flix danced around looking for a good enough stick, before he finally settled on a couple that would be good for roasting the sausages on. He rambled on about boiling water over a fire, and she smiled slightly, pulling out an old coffee tin from her bag.
"Actually, I have a bunsen burner, so it won't be quite open-flame, but it'll still be heated up with one..." She tapped on the can and placed the little burner "element" - just a piece of coat hanger she had fashioned into a star to fit on top - into the little slots she had cut for it.
"Voila! Mini camp-stove." She looked down proudly at her work, before moving to roast the sausage. She took note at how he set his on fire a couple of times, and tilted her head, doing pretty much the exactly same thing... She liked her food well-done, with a nice crisp to the outside.
"I'm going to get my tarp set up." She mumbled, standing up with the sausage in her mouth, tossing some to Bruce, who munched it happily. "I don't have a boyfriend, by the way. I am perpetually single. Only ever kissed one boy. It didn't end well." She chuckled at the memory. He wasn't worth her time, anyway.
Penelope wandered over to the rest of her supplies and dug out some tarps, setting them up so that the water would run down and away from her tent if it were to rain.
The second tarp she set up between some trees, tying her dry goods to the branches below it, making sure that the tarp was folded down on four sides to form a little shetler sort of deal, before placing her hands on her hips. "There! The perfect shelter. Since we're going to be out here for a few days, we might as well be prepared, right?" She glanced over to him and gave him a serious-faced thumbs up.
Penelope smiled softly at the way he tried to explain his multiple blunders, shaking her head slightly at how it must have looked to the response team to find out one od their own had been setting fires accidentally all over the HQ. She couldn't help but laugh at the whole image of it. He was probably one to try and fan the flames to put them out, too. She grinned at the image, raising her hand to cover her mouth, concealing the clear disobedience of her normally perpetually calm face.
"It's funny. I've made quite a few mistakes, too. That's why we're still cadets. We're still learning." Penelope spoke softly, reassuring him. When he broight up cuddling again, her mouth twisted slightly, not sure whether to frown or smile at him. So he had been suggesting they cuddle together? She barely even knew him, so there was no way in hell that would happen, considering all of their fire pokemon combined. She had her favourites here, opting to leave the others at home for safekeeping. But Bruce would be able to cuddle with her.
"I'll take a look when you get your things out to set up. How's that?" Penny smirked, raising her eyebrows. If he was really into showing off his books, then he would be torn between setting up and showing them off, or being lazy and sleeping under the stars. Either way, she was just trying to figure out the guy in front of her. Was he even capable of being serious? He was interesting to her, and she definitely wanted to figure him all out.
When he asked about the food, she nodded to Bruce, who went to gather her bag and drop it at her food. "It's mostly dried foods and fruits... Some cured meats, pasta... A bunch of apricots and dates." Penny smiled at Flix and started drawing out her things, pointing out all the different dried and cured foods she had brought. She was definitely in her element out here, having lived in the wilderness for so long after her mother had died.
"I am an excellent camper. I'll have a sausage." She waved him over, saying that she wanted a pointy stick to roast her food on, too.
When Flix actually looked genuinely upset and embarrassed about the situation with his instructor, she bit her lip and rubbed at her cheek awkwardly. She hadn't meant to dig up something that was painful, but she seemed to have a habit of doing things like that.
"Mm, sorry. I thought it was kind of funny, to be honest. I thought maybe it was another joke you played or something..." She felt bad now, so she tried to offer the warmest smile she could muster. "It's alright, everyone makes a bad mistake or two when they're just starting." She held up a thumb to encourage him, before letting her hand drop back down into her lap, still using her other hand to rub at Bruce's back, massaging into the tissue now.
"I thought you had meant something different about the tent, I apologise." Penelope shrugged her shoulders and looked over at her own tent. "But it is made for one person to sleep comfortably, even if we were literally on top of each other, it would be very, very uncomfortable..." She mumbled, thinking about it for a moment.
Great, that was an image she didn't want stuck in her head for the next few days of being out her with him.
"Did you really bring books? Multiple books?" She glanced at his bags and tilted her head. "You really came prepared, entertainment-wise, eh?" She looked back at her own gear; it was all survival equipment and food stuffs. "Guess we'll make a good team, I brought a lot of supplies and food." She nodded, thinking positive on the whole team-up, now.
Watching as Flix clambered his way down and back onto the ground, Penelope tilted her head and sighed softly, before sitting down on a little pad she had brought specifically for camping seats. She wiggled her butt into it to make it more comfortable, before looking up to Flix.
He had heard about her type preference? The corners of her mouth twitched slightly, almost begging her to smile at his comments on her houndoom. Her hand raised and obediently, the houndoom walked forward and placed his head under it, nuzzling it, before sitting by her side protectively.
"This is Bruce." She motioned to the houndoom, before pointing to the pile of sticks and logs in the middle of the fire pit. "Ember." She mumbled quietly to her pokemon, watching him light the fire with precision and ease.
At the mention of him joining her in the tent, she wrinkled her nose at him and leaned back a bit further away from him. "What did they tell you about me at the HQ...?" She mumbled. Penelope Reed was nothing of the sort of girl to jump into bed with a guy all willy-nilly. But the way that Flix presented it... She really couldn't take the proposition seriously.
"You heard partially correct. I like fire types, but I also like dark types... Really depends on the pokemon." Penelope smoothed her fingers over the dense black fur of Bruce's back before glancing to Flix, smiling.
"I heard you're a fan of fire, yourself." Her eyebrows went up in a bit of a joking manner, signally that she knew about his little... mishaps. "Someone from the other class told me about it... Did you buy the instructor new pants, or did he just wave it off?" She chuckled.
Penelope stared after Flix as he flung himself into the tree after his monkey pokemon. Her eyelids fluttered open and shut momentarily in a multiple-blink of amusement, before she rolled her eyes, moving to pull her tent out of her bag. It was a quick-setup one, where you just had to jolt it the right way and it popped open, fully functional and ready to go.
Other than weather screening, and a tarp to go over top. But she didn't need that up to get her tent done.
She bit her lip and flicked the tent outwards, watching it self-inflate into the spot she wanted it to, before rubbing her hands together. "Good weather now, it's supposed to get damp by nighttime. Wouldn't make much sense hanging out a soggy tent." She hummed to herself as she tossed her bag inside of the fully inflated tent, before looking at him over her shoulder.
"Besides, it doesn't take that long to set up. The group isn't supposed to be here untl mid-day tomorrow, so it's not like we can't relax a bit until then..." She moved around the little site she was building, looking at rocks to make a fire pit with.
"I do like s'mores." She mused to herself, although it was quiet enough that she hoped he didn't hear her little secret. It was suprising enough she had found out he was as agile as his money pokemon - any more information and she might have had an over-load.
She laughed to herself at her own joke before dropping the rocks she collected into a little circle around a hole she had partially dug out with her foot. "There. Now we can roast some... weenies." She wrinkled her nose at the word and glanced back to him again.
