It's an over-dignified shack but he calls it home nonetheless, or at least continues to pay rent regardless of the fact that he barely uses the place anymore. He blames his own sense of sentimentality, for the need to call somewhere someplace his home. He hates himself for needing that, at the same time can barely fault himself for it. At the end of the day, when he's done with camping outside and sleeping in someone else's home, he likes the idea of knowing that when all else fails, there was still this shitty little house he could crash in, if only for a night.
Everything is covered in dust, he hasn't been here for months at least. Avoiding it, his mind supplies bitterly, but he halts that train of thought, removing his shoes as he makes his way around. He avoids the stack of bills on the welcome rug, those would be dealt with later but for now he was too tired to sift through them and look through the damages. There was one particular letter that seemed to call attention, white like it's brethren but with a strip of yellow wrapped around it. Urgent. A Warning. He'd have to deal with that soon.
Everything is still where he had left them, not much to be stolen when the home held the bare minimum, missing a few luxuries here and there if Elijah was to be picky. He had emptied the fridge before he left, at least he had enough sense to do that, there wasn't anything to eat until he could find the time to run to the market so he doesn't even bother heading into the kitchen.
Instead he drops his ass onto the couch, a puff of dust displaced in his wake.
Penelope couldn't stand it anymore. She had taken a couple of days off to clear her head, and found herself standing outside the house that Elijah and her had one shared for a very few - although amazing - months. She glared at it, wondering what exactly she had seen in it. The charm was gone, and now it only carried hollow memories that dug into her heart like a garden spade and made her hate herself.
"Fucking... Bullshit." She huffed, before perking up as someone came walking along. The footsteps were heavy, but lazy, and it didn't take long before she could see the person coming around the corner.
Elijah. Fucking Elijah Castaire was walking up to the house like it had been sitting there, waiting for him all this time, even though she hadn't been.
Her fists clenched and she watched him step into the house, wander around a bit, and then flop down, disturbing dust as he did. The light through the window made it easy to see everything as he just sat there, and she couldn't help herself.
Her feet had already carried her to the door, and she flung it open and stormed into the living room, grabbing the closest thing she could find - an old newspaper she had been reading the day he up and left - hitting him right across the face with it.
"You piece of shit!" She couldn't help the anger that swelled in her. "You piece of fucking human garbage."
The newspaper hits him clean on the cheek, her stomping had been a warning but he'd been hit regardless. He braces himself with a breath, taking her all in, snarling features and all. Alarms were blaring in his mind. Danger, Danger! They rang, as clear of a thought as any when faced with an angry Penelope. Except, he wasn't moving from his spot, only glares right back at her in challenge.
He ignores what she yells, nothing he could do other than to reaffirm her claims, which would undoubtedly piss her off. "You're trespassing, thought you wanted to be a good little Ranger." Oops, that wasn't much better anyway but he had to point it out. Deathwish confirmed, he gets to his feet, if anything to intimidate as it was to feel more in control. Arceus help him, he'd need a lot more than that to deal with Penny, an aggravated one at that. "Last I remember, this was my house." His voice is cold, an air of arrogance that he normally imbues towards people he considers to waste his time. Funny how Penny has quickly become the Other. Someone not on his side, someone who would make it their point to ruin his day, yet another someone to oppose him.
He doesn't have to tell her anything. As far as she knew, he'd turned in his badge and run off. How long has it been anyway? Nearing six months since he'd last come around? Since he'd stopped receiving her calls and had her blocked out entirely? Sounded accurate enough. He'd travelled around, got to know some people, making connections here and there. But to say that she hadn't crossed his mind would be a straight out lie.
His jaw tightens at that thought, makes his cross his arms and examine her just a little more. "Just say what you want to say and leave." The quicker this got done with, the better.
Her jaw tightens, and she feels her nails press into her palms as he stands there, glaring right back at her like she means absolutely nothing to him. Her heart aches, but at the same time, she's so fucking angry she can't really think straight.
If he didn't have anything to say to her that would apologize for him being gone for six whole fucking months, then she was done. Completely done. She had tried in the past to forgive him for disappearing, she had loved him. But now all she felt for the person standing in front of her was hurt, anger, and dislike for who he was turning out to be.
"I can't believe you did this to me. Again. And yes, I am a good Ranger." She said indignantly, clenching her hands tighter as she glared at him. "But my name was also on the lease." She pointed to his face and glares at him angrily.
"I lived here, with you. You left. I can't fucking believe you left, but you did. Was I really that awful? I treated you like fucking gold. Or did you want to be treated like dirt?" She swallowed hard and drew her hand back to her chest, folding her arms across it.
"I loved you, and you fucking spit it in my face and bailed on everything. I will NEVER forgive you." She pulled out her phone and sent a quick text, asking to be picked up by one of the rangers that had told her she had business nearby and would be able to drive her back to Goldenrod later on.
"I wasn't expecting you to even be here, I don't have some sort of stupid speech prepared or anything." She tossed her phone back into her purse angrily and ran her hands along her face and into her hair, before tucking her fingers behind her neck, locking them there, cupping the nape.
"I'm just so... Disappointed." She looked at him sadly and turned away, heading towards the door. "I thought you could do better, but you're just a fucking coward, Elijah. Have fun ruining your life." She opened the door and looked back at him, feeling her tears well up. She couldn't take this. She thought she would be able to yell and argue with him like they used to when he would go away for months on end, but this time was different.
This time she couldn't stop herself from crying. That meant it was over.
