After a hilariously long detour involving wrong directions, pride, several meetings, new pokemon, and the acquisition of permits that could probably qualify as a short story or a series of short stories, Zernebog was finally at the Ruins of Alph to learn about the history of the area along with the area itself from the old scientists who managed the place.
At least that had been the plan. The one who had been in charge at the time was some flighty, forgetful old coot who believed in a hands-off approach like, say… having him explore and detail the ruins himself then return to the old man to compare notes.
He honestly didn’t know if the old man had been stalling for time because he had lost his notes again or if this was how he genuinely taught people, but he found that he didn’t mind. He did always prefer hands-on learning to theoretical book learning. It was easier to put things to heart and to really appreciate the material if he experienced it first-hand. The inherent dangers of exploring old ruins was only a bonus.
That was why he was accompanied by his Ralts, Isis, to this expedition as a training exercise in detection and battle. Psychics were always impeccable detectors and she had already shown him a hint of what she can do back in Union Cave. It made him eager to see what she can really do, plus it allowed him to focus more on his work.
Win-win situation - his favorite kind. And thus, they continued onwards into the ruins with naught but a flashlight in hand, pokeballs in his belt, and anticipation of what was to come.

Whenever one goes into Goldenrod, there is usually one impression that stands out amongst the rest. Goldenrod was huge. It was a huge concrete jungle filled with twists and turns, countless sounds and smells, and most importantly forms of life from the simple plants, the roaming pokemon, and the hustle and bustle of trainers.
For someone used to the natural, lush green jungles and the cold, rocky mountain slopes of nature, cities tended to be very jarring even years after he had first entered into one. While he liked change and people… this was a little too much. It did not help that Goldenrod was the biggest city in the region and was said to be one of the biggest in the world. He didn’t know if it was intentional or not but these kinds of places made one feel how small they were in comparison to the world, like ants on an ant hill.
Still, Zernebog pressed on with Ra by his side. He had business in the city -as irritating as it was- and sometimes needs trumped over wants and comfort. He just hoped that the information was good or he would have wasted his time in this uncomfortable place for nothi-
Bump!
Zernebog stumbled back a bit as he bumped into someone while looking at the signs. Ow. Fuck. Rookie mistake. He turned towards the other person and eyed them with a little concern.
”Sorry about that. You okay, miss?” He asked. Beside him, Ra also clucked in apology for his master while also being kind of distracted by the sights and smells of the place.

The implications of Zernebog’s words did not immediately sink into the Treecko, or at least it looked like it didn’t if that unmistakable look of confusion on its face was a good indication of its thoughts. While it wasn’t an automatic no, the uncertainty in the green lizard’s expression made the theory shaky. Maybe he had made too far of a leap in logic? After all, just because a Treecko made one familiar expression and that the voice of its trapped trainer down the well sounded remarkably like his best friend Ricki did not mean that this was Trip or that the girl down below was Ricki.
However, most of his doubts were erased when the Treecko lost the confused expression for a joyous one and nodded and confirmed that he was indeed Trick. Adorable little Trick was still the same after all these years and a part of him felt content at that fact because at least a little bit of his past remained the same.
That happy revelation was marred with one of horror for both him and a quiet Ra as Trick also confirmed that the girl trapped in the well was Ricki herself. His eyebrow twitched violently, a deep worried scowl crossing his face and Isis immediately started patting his arm to try and calm him down.
Trick didn’t need the puppy dog eyes or any other form of convincing. As soon as the violent lurch of emotions settled, he already had a course of action set in mind. ”You and Ra stay up here, Trick. Me and Isis will go get her.”
In a much softer voice, he leaned in and whispered his instructions to Isis. ’You saw that girl at the bottom of the well, right? Teleport us to her.”
“Ra~” And they vanished in a flash of light, surprising Ra and making him fall down his butt.
“Tor?”
Another flash of light heralded trainer and pokemon appearing before the downed girl slumped against the wall of the well. He took a moment to stare at her dark, silhouetted form before approaching her. He switched his grip on Isis to one arm before he knelt down in front of her.
”Are you alright?” He let his deep voice echo along the walls for a moment before continuing. ”Can you stand?”

After spending quite a bit of his time in the Ruins of Alph, Zernebog decided that a break was in order before the sheer monotony of studying the ruins with the old guys drove him mad or suck the fun youthful energy from his body and make him boring. Well, he knew that those old men couldn’t actually do that but spending long periods of time with such stifling company tended to chafe for a person like him after a while. He needed a breath of fresh air both literally and figuratively.
This was why he had ventured out north into the route that was connected to the northern entrance of the Ruins of Alph. He had already explored the other entrance and its surroundings and made himself familiar with it so now it was time for him to extend the same courtesy to the other side.
So far, this other side was filled with much foliage and wildlife. Unlike in the other side, these wildlife did not bother to accost him and his companions - his Torchic Ra and his honedge Was- so it was already a good start. He could attempt to hunt down and challenge the wildlife later once he got his relaxation and breather. He just hoped that the two wouldn’t pick a fight before then, otherwise he might have to let out Isis too to calm these two down. Adamant and Sassy do not mix well unless they’re united against a common enemy after all.
As he walked, he wondered who he might encounter in the area as he hadn’t seen humans around yet. It was odd but it was also nearing dusk and most of the travelers would have started bunkering down in towns, cities, or tents for the night unless they preferred to travel in the dark for whatever reason.

Zernebog blinked when the small green lizard decided to reply by pointing down into the well. He placed his hands on the side of the well and looked down, only to see the silhouette of a humanoid figure lying down at the very bottom. Its trainer, perhaps? Or one of its pokemon buddies?
He wasn’t able to think on it more as the Treecko brought his attention back to it. He tilted his head and raised an eyebrow as he watched the green lizard pat the ladder on the side of the well’s wall and then mimed a stick snapping before pointing at the bottom of the well with the humanoid figure inside of it. From what he was seeing, the Treecko seemed to be saying that this person or pokemon climbed down the ladder but then it snapped, leaving them trapped down there in need of help.
”Isis, come over here.” Zernebog made a ‘come here’ gesture without looking at his pokemon, still looking down the well and the person in it, completely missing the Treecko’s eyes shocked reaction to Ra.
Being the recipient however, Ra did not miss said shocked expression and returned it with one of his own upon finally realizing that this Treecko wasn’t just any Treecko. It was Trick the Treecko, his friendly rival -humans called the term frivals? Or at least Trick’s owner did- that was owned by his master’s best friend, Ricki. A human they hadn’t seen in years.
Wait. If Trick is here, could something have possibly happened to his second favorite human…? Before he could ask, a familiar voice floated up the tunnel, making both Zernebog -who had been carrying an intensely curious Isis in his arms after she went over to him so that they could both check the well- and Ra go still.
Both of them watched the Treecko crawl down the well for a little bit before popping up again and giving Zerne a huge pair of sparkling, horribly familiar puppy dog eyes. If Ra hadn’t already figured it out, then this would have clued him in that this WAS Trick.
Zerne though? It only clicked for him just now. ”...well shit. I’d recognize that expression anywhere. Trick, is that you?” He paused and then his eyebrow twitched. ”And is that Ricki trapped down the well?”

It took a second try, a map, and another rest day at the pokemon center, but Zernebog and his small party finally made their way through Union Cave and to the wild bushes of the other side. By then, it was starting to get dark out as the first hints of dusk were starting to set in. Of course it could also be that storm coming this way from the other edge of the sky making it a little darker than usual.
Despite the incoming rain, Ra decided to stay outside and accompany him along with Isis. He didn’t know if it was pride or if it was because he didn’t trust their new addition to the team despite her modest and polite nature or if he got a little paranoid after their encounters in the cave, but he let him stay outside with them despite his nature as a fire-type pokemon. At least he wasn’t a Charmander or this might’ve been a different story.
Of all the things he had been expecting to see though, a Treecko perched on some well near the end of the route was not one of them. A Treecko trying to get his attention while on said well was even lower on his list of expected things to see, but really Johto kept throwing him curveballs with unexpected bullshit so he really should be less surprised than he was.
”Wonder what it wants…?” Zernebog wondered, tilting his head. He paused for a moment before his curiosity won over, making him go over to the pokemon on the well.
”Okay, I’ll bite.” He remarked with a small smile as he went close to the Treecko, not noticing the thoughtful expression on his Torchic’s face as he stared at the familiar Treecko. ”Do you need something? Or does someone else need something and you’re just the messenger?” He guessed with a wry smirk.
[attr="class","yorkc3"]Torchic sticks with its Trainer, following behind with unsteady steps. This pokemon dislikes darkness because it can't see its surroundings. It breathes fire of over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, including fireballs that leave the foe scorched black. It has a place inside its body where it keeps its flame. Give it a hug—it will be glowing with warmth. It is covered all over by a fluffy coat of down.

If its horns capture the warm feelings of people or Pokémon, its body warms up slightly. This Pokémon rarely appears before people. [attr="class","yorkc3"]Apparently this Pokémon is born when a departed spirit inhabits a sword. It attaches itself to people and drinks their life force. If anyone dares to grab its hilt, it wraps a blue cloth around that person's arm and drains that person's life energy completely.
