Harper sighed softly - although all her sighs were generally soft, considering they produced no noise - and trekked her way through Goldenrod City, glaring at the handheld device in her hand. It had been making spelling errors and grammar mistakes all day, and the only people who could really fix it were here, in Goldenrod.
So here she was, marching her way down the street to the little electronic boutique she had gotten it set up at. Generally she would fix these kinds of things herself, but she didn't have much time to work on her little gadgets these days, she just over-used them to talk to the different people she met.
Generally, she just used Eva, her Espeon, to talk to people now. But she liked to ask first if she can talk through her pokemon, which meant - you guessed it - going through her communicator. Which was currently making simple words very, very, crude or unintelligible.
As she marched, she tucked away her communicator and bent down to pick up Eva, who was trotting beside her happily, before moving to stand up, only to come into contact with a person-like wall that had somehow gotten in her way. She felt her hair blown against her face as she fell backwards, and then the hard sting of concrete as she fell onto the sidewalk, sitting there with a most-definitely bruised butt.
Hands fumbling, she tried to reach her communicator to apologize, but Eva was already doing it for her. "I'm so sorry!" Eva mimicked what Harper's voice sounded like in her own head. "I wasn't looking where I was going when I picked my pokemon up." Eva glanced pointedly back to Harper, who was still trying to get the stinging out of her road-rashed hands.
Sam had made his arrival to Goldenrod yesterday and had gotten to spend some fun already in the Game Corner, playing Voltorb Flip and doing some shopping in the Goldenrod Department Store. The problem however was that besides those two places and the Gym, there wasn't much to see or experience, so Sam was rather bored. Thoughts of making his leave today were going through his head, because it wasn't like he had interests in taking the gym right now. Even if Milo, his Skorupi, was a though fighter, tackling a gym with him alone wasn't a good idea.
So, with nothing else to really do, Sam was taking a walk through the streets with Milo resting on his shoulder. Only walking around aimlessly wasn't that fun though, as the city itself wasn't all that interesting to the young man.
At some point he had went ahead and dug up his Pokégear from his pocket, twiddling with whatever settings he could and checking if anyone might've tried to contact him. While doing this, Sam wasn't really paying attention to his surroundings and about to walk right at someone who was crouching. The Skorupi on his shoulder however had noticed this, but was too late to get his trainer's attention and the two humans bumped into each other, while the girl tried to get back to a standing position.
The contact didn't exactly hurt, but wasn't pleasant either. While the girl herself fell down on her ass, Sam rebalanced himself by taking a couple of quick steps back.
Thankfully Milo hadn't fallen off from the trainer's shoulder nor had Sam accidentally dropped the Pokégear when he had gotten bumped into. With the important things in check, the young man was now looking at the blonde girl and her Espeon on the ground.
While the girl herself seemed to be twiddling around with some kind of gizmo, the Espeon spoke up, seemingly communicating it's trainers own words. Maybe the blondie was mute, but this was all speculation and it wasn't like it really mattered. She was apologizing, though even Sam knew that it was both sides fault. Still, not like he was going to admit it. "It's fine. Accidents happen." The trainer said in a lax tone, waving his hands a couple of times from left to right. "Are you fine? Seemed like a rough fall." Sam continued, offering his hand to the girl.
Harper, who had finally regained some sense of composure after her tumble to the ground, was brushing herself off when the man she had bumped into offered her his hand. Shit, what had he been saying? She looked to Eva, who silently explained that the boy was showing some semblance of relaxed concern for her well-being, before returning her gaze to the hand of Sam.
Harper sighed and reached out, taking Sam's hand as she pulled herself up, brushing her butt off in the meantime. Her skirt was covered in dirt from the fall, but after a few brush-pats, things seemed to look in ship-shape for actually talking to the guy.
"It's alright! I'm fine." Harper smiled at Sam and waved his words off like they were flies buzzing around her. "I should have been looking where I was going." Of course, she was speaking through Eva, who was perched in her arms now that her master was upright and sound on her feet once more.
"I'm Harper, this is Eva. Normally I have a little handheld communicator, so I hope this doesn't bother you." She continued through Eva, who was lazily purring and snuggling into her arms now. "My communicator is on the fritz, though. So... I can't really use it..." She paused, then rubbed at her face, realizing she probably shouldn't say any more until the person in front of her agreed to having a voice chime in their head, rather than an actual conversation.
Sam helped the girl up. She responded to the question by saying she was okay and took the blame for the contact, which the young man didn't mind. He only responded to it with a small smirk and a nod. Good thing the person Sam bumped into wasn't the kind that would have made a big deal out of this.
The blondie, Harper, proceeded to introduce herself and explained why she was communicating through her Espeon, Eve. Sam had now registered that the girl really must be mute, with the communicator and a Pokémon with abilities to communicate with it's powers. Of course she could just be the kind of person who doesn't want to talk or something among those lines, but that didn't seem too likely.
The odd thing about Harper was the fact that she seemed to be worried about Sam being bothered about the way she communicated. This was the guy's first time being talked through a psychic-type Pokémon, but it didn't bother him. It just was an odd experience is all. "I'm Samguk, but you can just call me Sam and this fellow on my shoulder is Milo." Sam introduced himself and his partner in return, lifting his hand to pat the Skorupi's smooth head. "And no need to worry about communicating through your Espeon. I'm cool with it." He continued to ensure Harper that he had no problem with the way they comminucated. Honestly, he'd probably do it himself if he had some Pokémon capable of the same as the blondie's Espeon.
An idea popped into Sam's head completely out of nowhere. He didn't have anything to do anyways, so he might as well try to get some company out of Harper. Her communicator was broken and Goldenrod was pretty much the most advanced place in Johto technologically, so maybe she was heading to get it fixed. Well, not like Sam would find out by just guessing, so he might as well ask. "Are you heading to get your gizmo fixed?" He asked with a raised brow and a lax smile.
The relaxation that washed over Harper was almost instantaneous. She gave him a grateful smile for not minding the way she communicated, before shrugging her shoulders. "Generally I like to make sure before I do it. Some people are pretty protective over their minds, you know!" Harper laughed softly, a silent raspy sound, but you could definitely tell that it was a laugh if you really tried to listen for it. Plus the smile on her face gave it away.
When he asked about her communicator, Harper blinked and reached into her pocket, juggling Eva with the other hand as she tried to pull it out of the confines of her clothing. "Yes! I was going to take it to-" She paused. To her family's tech store. Even though it wasn't technically her family's anymore. "That store, just down the street here." She motioned down the street to a little sign that stuck out of the stone buildings.
"They do good work. The new owners are a bit... Rude, really. But they fix things up pretty quickly." Harper didn't mean to toss shade, it just sort of came out that way when she thought about the people who had taken over her company when her parents had gone bankrupt. One day she would win the company back, and then rub it in the stupid new-old-owners faces.
"Did... you want to come check it out? They do mods on pokegear, too." She pointed with her pinkie finger to the gear in his hands, smiling brightly while she tried to stuff the communicator back into her pocket. "Might have a cool application for you to test out or something." Harper shrugged her shoulders.
Well wasn't that cute. Harper seemed so relieved to know that Sam was okay with the way of communication, even giving off a laugh. Though it didn't sound like one exactly, being way too quiet and raspy, but the look on the girl's face showed everything necessary to know she was laughing. "Well, as long as you don't start digging up all my secrets from my head, everything will be fine." Sam laughed in response to the girl telling why she likes to make sure people are okay with speaking through Eve the Espeon.
Watching Harper switch hands with which to hold her Espeon with made the young man ponder that if it was bothersome. Espeons' height around average were close to a meter and a bit over 25 kilos in weight, so it must not be too easy to carry a Pokémon like that. Then again, Sam had the Scorpion Pokémon resting on his shoulder, which was around 80 cm in heigth and weighed about 12 kilos and he was completely fine.
The girl told that she was going to the shop down the street, with a slight pause mid-sentence that Sam didn't miss, though he didn't bother questioning it. He just continued listening to Harper, who sounded like she knew the shop and it's owners well enough to even have an opinion about them. Interesting.
Gears had started turning in Sam's head and he had in less than a second come up with a bullshit story about his Pokégear malfunctioning and that he was looking for a store to have it be checked out. This was going to be his attempt at being able to accompany Harper to her visit to the store, but it turned out to be pointless as the blondie herself seemed to invite Sam. "Sure. I could use something to spice up my Pokégear." He responded with a grin. The guy didn't have any problems with this turn of events, as this just saved him the effort of spouting bullshit. "Lead the way." He continued grinning, swiping his arm to his side to give way to Harper.
Harper smiled excitedly when Sam agreed to come with her to the store. Maybe if another person came with her, she wouldn't have to deal with the owners being rude to her. Maybe they would be kind today, and avoid any confrontation.
Humming in her head, she placed Eva down on the ground and waited for the pokemon to right herself, watching the little one shake and wiggle her way into the land of the waking, before looking up to her master, eyes blinking tiredly. She wanted to nap in Harper's arms more, but Harper could only hold the pokemon for so long before it became tedious.
"So!" She clasped her hands together, walking past his arm that he held out to let her lead the way. "This will be interesting, I've never gone there with anyone else!" She chimed and walked down the street, determined.
Once she was outside the shop, she glanced up to the sign, tilting her head at the name "Pruitt" on it, before pushing the door open to reveal the inside. Shiny, white and silver floors and walls and instruments placed out on the tables for people to tinker with, connected by small cables that ran through the tables and connected to a central security system.
"Ah, the prodigal child returns! How's it going mute-y? Cat still got your tongue?" The man behind the desk laughed at her. Harper wrinkled her nose and stuck her tongue out at him, showing it was very much in-tact.
Sam followed right behind Harper, grinning at her words. She really did seem to be more acquaintanced with the store than the normal customer. "Wow, Harper. You're making me feel real special here." The young man jokingly replied.
It didn't take too long for the two to arrive to the shop, which had a sign with the name 'Pruitt' on it. The same was a simple kind of silly, causing Sam to snort from holding back his laughter. He felt sad for anyone with that name.
The shop was a rather impressive place. Too impressive to be honest. The basic picture of a shop specializing with gizmos and shit like that to Sam was a small and messy place, covered with all kinds of scrap. Not that he wanted the shop to be like that, but this all felt too much to the young man.
Seemingly out of nowhere a man appeared out nowhere and he seemed to know Harper. Calling the girl a 'prodigical child' did stand out, but that was tossed aside in Sam's head the moment the man called the blondie 'mute-y'. What a pathetic thing to call someone. Sam just looked at the man with a somewhat confused look, pondering that how boring of a guy do you have to be to call someone 'mute-y'. He even went ahead and used the 'cat got your tongue' line.
"Harper? Who's this bland fuck?" Sam asked from the girl, turning his head towards her with a raised brow and finger pointing towards the man.
Harper gasped slightly at Sam's words before glancing back to the owner of the shop, who was sneering, clearly not bothered by being called bland. Well, he did have a thick skull. "He's my uncle." Harper answered casually, before pulling out her communicator. Eva rubbed against her legs soothingly before growling at the man behind the counter.
"This piece of shit you keep 'fixing', isn't working." Harper tossed the communicator on the desk and stuffed her hands into her pocket, glaring at her uncle. "You keep giving me faulty hardware, and I'm not paying every time I come here anymore. I want a new one, and I want it for free." She slammed her hand down on the counter, Eva backing her up with a growl and the fur on her back raising. Her tail whipped around, thumping against the tables of equipment.
The man behind the counter just laughed at her and rolled his eyes. "If you're so sure it's faulty, why don't you just fix it yourself? Brain not working that great anymore? Must be that psychic pokemon frying up the neurons." He cackled and looked at Sam, waggling his eyebrows. "You even brought your boyfriend here this time, how cute. He as dumb as you? At least he has vocal chords." He flicked Harper in the forehead.
Harper raised her hand and smacked his away, before grabbing the communicator and chucking it at his head. "You're a real piece of shit, you know! No one else has a problem with the way I communicate!" Her face was visibly angry, but all the communication was done through Eva, who was only translating to her uncle. It would look pretty strange to anyone else.
"Take the stupid communicator! I don't need it anyway." Harper huffed silently, her shoulders drawing up to enhance the glare. "You're useless!"
Harper and the man being related came out as a surprise to Sam. He didn't exactly see the family resemblance in the two. Well, maybe he kinda did if he really squinted his eyes and let his imagination change the picture a little bit, but otherwise the two didn't seem all that related to the young man.
The next thing that happened had to be one of the oddest thing one could see without context. Hell, even with context it was rather confusing and seemed weird as fuck. What was obvious by the expressions and mannerisms of Harper was that the two were arguing. Honestly, Sam didn't have any real interest in getting involved into this and just remained there in silent, observing and listening the few times the girl's uncle spoke.
"Boyfriend, eh..." Sam muttered to himself for no real reason. The man really did seem to like taking a jab at her niece, especially about her muteness. This kind of family matter were just bothersome really. Even witnessing one was just tiring to the young man. The Skorupi on his shoulder was more indifferent about the situation, though that was mostly because Milo had no real idea what was going on and had this questioning look.
The argument with a hint of family dilemmas seemed to be put into an end with Harper forcing her communicator onto her uncle's hands and giving him the death glare. At this point if wasn't really necessary to know exactly what she was saying, because it was pretty easy to make a somewhat accurate guess based on her posture and glare alone. "We done here or..." Sam questioned, ignoring the current atmosphere.
Harper sighed softly and spun on her heel, marching over to Sam, who was waiting for her, seemingly uninterested in everything that was happening, for the most part, anyway. "Do you want to see if they have any additions for your pokegear?" She asked, glancing around at the shop, before pulling out her own pokegear to show it to him.
"If you pick up a couple of good parts, I can do the mods for you..." She glanced down to Eva, who looked much more relaxed now that she was talking to Sam, instead of the dickhead behind the counter. Her fur flattened, and her tail swished gently from side to side, eyes scanning over him curiously as Harper spoke to him through her.
"I can tell you the parts..." She flicked her pokegear on and looked it over, pointing out all the parts on a nearby parts table. "Just those four, and I'll be able to boost performance and add some cool features." Harper smiled and shrugged her shoulders, ignoring the taunting calls of her uncle from behind the counter.
"It's up to you, though!" Harper finally close up her pokegear and tucked it back away, tucking her arms behind her back. "I'd be happy to help you out."
Harper turned around to look at Sam and asked if he still wanted to check some stuff for his Pokégear, even offering that she would take care of the technicalities. He already came here and his Pokégear was quite bland at the moment, so it wouldn't hurt to at least check something out, especially since he wouldn't have to fuck around with setting the parts himself if he did end up buying something. "Sure, sure." Sam said non-chalantly, scratching the behind of his head a bit.
For a moment the guy and his partner on his shoulder lowered their gazes to look at the Espeon, who seemed to be eyeing on the trainer with a rather curious look. Not really being able to help it, Sam felt a tad bit like there was more behind it than just curiosity, but could just as well be some paranoia. The Skorupi on his shoulder however wasn't thinking as much, but was rather looking at the Espeon as another trainers Pokémon, judging if he'd win or lose.
Once Harper spoke up and pointed out the items she said would be necessary for the upgrade, the young man lifted his eyes back and curiously looked at the parts. They weren't expensive, but they weren't cheap either. Still, Sam did consider that he might get them.
With the voice of the blondie's uncle heard in the background, the messy haired brunette considered if he would get the parts. Like he had already observed earlier, they weren't expensive and in addition, he'd get the set up and modifications basically free. Hell, he might even get some bonus points and the company of a pretty girl wasn't anything Sam was against. With all this pros, the choice was quite obvious to him. "Alright. I'll get these parts and take you up on your offer." The young man looked at Harper with a smile.
While Sam looked over the new supplies and hardware that he would be adding to his pokegear, Harper glanced over to her uncle and tossed him the finger, before looking to Eva, who stuck her nose up at the jerk that they had been talking to before. Really, her family had been such snobs to begin with. She had no idea how she even came from the same stalk.
Sighing to herself and rubbing her temples, she grinned as Sam agreed to get the parts that she had pointed out. They were all discounted since they weren't already in a device, and it was a relatively good deal for everything here, as opposed to other stores that marked them up to actually make money. Pruitt Industries already made enough of that.
"Great!" The cheerful voice resounded telepathically, before Harper twisted around and walked over to the counter, pointing out the pieces Sam would need before handing over some money to her uncle, once the exchange was done, Harper waltzed back over to Sam and took up all the parts, stuffing them into her bag.
"You can buy me lunch while I work on this, sound like an even trade?" She grinned at him and tilted her head, waiting for a reply patiently. If he wasn't okay with buying her lunch, then he could just pay her back the little she had spent. Being a Pruitt meant getting a discount, though. As much as her uncle hated it, the legal contracts said he had to give her things at a good price.
"So... lunch?" Harper offered her hand to him in a more formal greeting than they had had before - smashing into each other.
Seemingly quite cheery from Sam saying yes, Harper just went ahead and picked up the part, even paying for them while at it. The guy himself just stood there, waiting for the girl to come back and tell her what is the catch. The two had just met, so it was very unlikely this would turn out to be a completely free thing for him.
Turned out that Harper made an offer of lunch for parts and set up, which Sam immediately nodded to. She was even offering her hand for a handshake. Wasn't that just dandy. "Sounds good to me." He chirped, replying with his own smile. This trade honestly seemed more in favour for Sam, as he's getting parts and the set up for the cost of a single meal. Normally those would cost at the very least two of them. As long as the blondie wouldn't turn out to be a huge glutton, this was Sam's win. "It was starting to be around time for some grub anyways." He added and finally grabbed Harper's hand, shaking it a bit.
"Why don't you just choose the place we would go to eat? Goldenrod's not that familiar to me, and you getting to choose could be seen as a small bonus. Just remember that I'm not exactly rolling in dough." Sam said to the girl. Everything he said was point on. He didn't know any places and Harper seemed to know her way around the city herself, so she was way more fit to choose where they would eat. As long as it wouldn't be expensive and has good salad, he'd be okay with everything.
Harper smiled gently as Sam approved her request to join her for lunch, tapping her chin as he pointed out that he didn't hve much money. She gave him a little look over before noddingonce more and placing her hands onto her hips. Once they were out of the shop, she pointed in a random direction.
There were cheap food places all over Goldenrod, but the one she had in mind had a sort of Mexican flare to it, specializing in burritos and other Mexican type food. She hummed as she walked, forgetting momentarily that coversing was part of going to lunch with someone, until Eva politely reminded her that she had company, and that talking might be a necessity.
Laughing awkwardly, Harper raised her fingers to her hair, running them through the long blinde strands before giving Sam a smile, and a thumbs up. "Sorry, I'm so used to going places alone that it didn't really occur to me that conversation is sort of a reasonable kind of thing in these sort of situations." Harper laughed silently before rubbing at her cheek, wondering what kind of topic she should start.
"What brings you to Goldenrod, anyway?" Harper started off, tucking her hands behind her back as she continued to walk towards their destination. They were almost there. A few more turns and they would be all set to eat some cheap lettuce and bean wraps. They even had burrito salad bowl options. It was a heaven for people who liked veggies and healthy bean options.
