Sam was pleased that the girl seemed to have registered what he had said, and the two made their leave, with Sam looking behind at Harper's uncle with a smirk and eyes that looked like he was looking at trash, and gave the man a wave of a hand. There was no real meaning to it besides the fact that it was a sort of silent 'fuck you'. Hopefully the man was smarter than he seemed and would be able to realize the message.
The two and their Pokémon walked, well Milo was resting on Sam's shoulder but whatever, without saying a word and the young man didn't mind it. It meant saving energy and besides sometimes forcing conversations just made things awkward, so it was better to not just say anything if there was no topics. This silence however was broken by Harper, who asked what Sam was doing in the city.
Pondering a bit what kind of answer he should give, the brunette just ended up shrugging. "I honestly have no real purpose here. I'm just kinda travelling for fun and looking around places." He answered, giving the most boring answer he could; the truth. "What about you then?" Sam asked in return, showing some sort of interest in his tone, though a bit of it might've been forced. Though what he had told was in no way anything personal, the young man wasn't going to be the only telling their reason for being here.
Harper listened carefully to Sam's answer to her question, nodding slowly at the honesty that he seemingly portrayed. Either he was a good liar, or he just was really wandering around without a big aim as to what he was doing.
"Ah, that's actually pretty admirable, Sam!" Harper smiled brightly at him and nodded fervently, before glancing around to make sure they turned the right way. Once she had turned down the street, she smiled at his reciprocation of the question.
"Well, I had to get my communicator fixed, but I think I'll just use Eva for now... No one else seems to have an issue with her but my family." She laughed, finding it ironic, since the entire reason that she never developed her vocal chords was because of they way they treated her when she was younger. The literal lack of communication had caused atrophy in her throat and vocal box, making it nearly impossibly to speak.
If she ever wanted to talk normally, she would have to exercise them every day. And quite frankly, she didn't think it was worth it to be like that.
"But now I'm just here for the food, maybe battle the gym leader. Depends on how much I get done before I head out, to be honest." Harper finished, stopping in front of the little box restaurant that sold the delicious Mexican food.
"Is this place alright?" She motioned to the restaurant and smiled sweetly. If he said no, she would think of another cheap place for them to sit down at have lunch together.
Sam gave a questioning look to the girl's reaction to his reason for being in Goldenrod. Admirable? How the hell is it admirable to the girl? But then again, it was sort of pleasant to have someone actually have a positive reaction for his way of life, so he didn't bother questioning Harper.
Listening in return to Harper's own reason, Sam automatically made a mental note out of her family having a problem with the girl using Eve as a means of communicating and connected it to her uncle. "Yeah, just use this way to communicate. I would, as it is much more convenient." The young man gave his own comment, rather for the side note than for the reason to visit the city itself.
Harper continued and Sam nodded, remembering that the gym existed. He had kind of forgotten its existance for a short bit of time, even though he had thought about it before bumping into the girl walking right next to her. Maybe he'll tackle the gym himself if he'd find some interesting Pokémon for his team.
Setting plans for the gym for later, once the two finally arrived to the gym that was Harper's choice, which seemed to be a little Mexican restaurant. The blondie asked if the place was okay with a smile sweet enough for one to almost taste it. Sam himself gave a calm smile, with only a small difference to his neutral expression. "Yup. I trust that you chose a good place."
Harper, being raised to be polite by some of her caretakers, did the courteous thing and reached out, opening the door and holding it for him as she stepped inside, smelling the delightful smell that wafted out of the door and across her nose, making her mouth water slightly.
"I love this place, they have great food." She thought she was thinking to herself, but Eva had decided that she would translate. Harper blushed slightly and glanced to Sam, blinking. "Sometimes Eva tells people my personal thoughts, so that's a bit of a downside." She grinned at him, before passing him to step up to the counter.
All around the counter top was different types of veggies and mixes to put inside a tortilla, or into a bowl for a salad. Harper clasped her hands together and gave the man behind the counter a signal to come over and help them out, before smiling politely.
"Hi there! I'll have a lar-" She stopped herself. Sam didn't have much money, so she wouldn't waste his money on something she probably would need to take as leftovers. "A small burrito. Beans, lettuce, tomato, salsa, green peppers, olives, cucumber..." She listed off all the ingredients she wanted, before nodding firmly. "Perfect!" She pressed her finger against the glass separating her from the toppings.
"Choose your item, Sam!" Harper glanced over to him and reach down, petting Eva between the ears, who appreciated the recognition that she had been doing a good job translating.
Harper really was an awfully polite girl, even opening a door for Sam. He didn't mind it really, but wouldn't himself really bother to do that. The guy just walked past the girl and entered inside the place. What made him turn his head was hearing a sudden thought from the blonde. She afterwards that the Espeon had a habit of telling even her thoughts that aren't supposed to be. "Well that's kinda bothersome. You think she just misunderstands that they should be told or does she do it on purposed?" Sam showed some interest in his question. The Espeon seemed smart enough to know what's just a passing thought and what isn't, so the trainer himself thought to just ask out of curiosity.
The two got over to the counter and the amount of option was rather impressive, with Sam already starting to ponder what he'll take and Milo struggling to not start drooling on his trainer's shoulder.
Harper signaled the man, calling him over. What next happened was justs silence, that Sam just figured out to be the blonde telling her own order. Waiting for his own turn to make his turn, the young man smiled once the girl told him to tell what he wants. "Medium sized burrito, with fillings being beans, lettuce, salsa, tomatoes, lots of olives, green and red pepper and jalopeños. Also, grab me two bottles of water to drink." Sam listed off, keeping it to his tastes and taking bottles for him and Harper. He wasn't sure if she had already picked a drink, but it was better to play it safe. Even if she had, he could use something to drink ready with him anyways later in the day. "And a small burrito with the same fillings." He added, remembering his partner Pokémon. If he was going to eat, he might as well get some grub for Milo too.
With the orders made, the employee told the amount that the orders would cost and Sam payed it with the even amount, as he already had enough small change in his waller so more of that would just be bothersome. Once the money was handed over and the young man got the receipt, with the employee telling that they'll bring their orders to their table.
So with that taken care of, Sam turned around to scan through the place, seeing that they're pretty much free to pick whatever place they wanted. "You wanna pick the table? I don't really care about the spot myself." He said, disinterested and scratching the back of his head a bit.
Harper didn't pay much attention from the moment she ordered her food, unitl the moment that they had sat down at the table. After she had taken her seat, she let Eva catch her up on everything Sam had said, before opening up the foiled end of her burrito to start munching on it.
"I hope this one is okay!" She smoothed her free hand over the table and grinned at him, before pulling out the bag of parts, foregoing eating her burrito until she started to work on modifying his Pokegear.
"I can add a couple of cool updates here and there..." Harper was moreso musing to herself, but Eva felt the need to translate, just in case he wanted to know what she was saying. "So! Different installs and applications have different purposes. A better GPS will tell you exactly right down to what step you're taking on a specific route." She started poking around easily at the pokegear, taking it apart with expertise.
"A great install would be to do the GPS, and the map system. You can literally tell where you are at all times, on any given map, anywhere in the world!" Harper looked up at him excitedly, eyes flashing. Eva was good at portraying the girls' emotions, thank Arceus. It would have been pretty boring to see Harper's face light up the way it did with no emotion behind the voice that was being provided.
Sort of like watching old Chinese movies with English dubs over the original actor's voices. It just wouldn't line up; as hilarious as it might be.
"So! I think I'll do a couple of modifications here and there, then you should be set to do some world-class travelling!"
