Penny couldn't have been more embarrassed if she tried. Showing weaknesses was not something she was good at, especially on a first mission with someone she didn't even know would wind up being assigned to be her permanent partner.
The rest of the mission had gone amazingly, though. Penelope had helped Flix set up his tent like hers so that it would be sheltered, and even offered him some of her spare blankets until his had dried out.
The observation went swimmingly, and they were able to make four arrests in the time that they spent together in the forest. She couldn't really dent that they were a really good team, and they worked well together. Even the commissioner had pointed it out when they got assigned as a permanent team.
So after a few local missions together, and things moving and progression rather nicely, Penelope was sure that things would be working smoothly from now on.
Today was a simple one; they had to look over tapes of security footage and try and find out who had stolen a bunch of jewels from a local shop. Penelope, being a keen worker, had arrived early and was already through a couple of tapes, taking jot notes and collecting data on everyone who was around the area. She even noted any small blips or flickers in the camera's quality.
"Haaaa, this is tiring..." She stretched out and cracked a couple of joints, before getting back to it, leaning in close while she took down free-hand notes on a pad of paper in front of her.
Hearing what today;s job would be, Flix couldn't stop groaning. It was such boring work! Where was the arrests? The excitement? The battles and fights?! Instead they would sit in front of a screen and try to get faces and put them through the system to find out who they were. "UUUUGGHH" yet another groan echoed through the cafeteria while he stood in line to pay for his food.
One of his friends in the ranger base patted him on the shoulder and reassured him that it wouldn't be that bad, especially since he had "such a cute partner" he pointed out with a wink and a nudge. To which Flix shrugged off as normal "boyish" things to say between men.
Once he branched off from his friend, his arms full of snacks and food and things, he made his way toward the video observing room where Penny was certainly waiting for him patiently.
"I have arrived and I have brought happiness!" He nearly sang the words while awkwardly opening the door with barely a hand and sliding in, dropping all the goodies he had gotten onto the table. Some pizza, some sweets, cakes, peanuts, and even some coffee if they needed any.
"Go ahead, eat at your heart's content~" He said while diving toward a pizza slice and already getting his face dirty with bread, cheese, tomato sauce and toppings of happiness. "Anything found yet?" The words came out mid swallow, which stung a bit in his chest.
Penny glanced up as the door slid open, and in waltzed Flix with his usual armada of treats and candies. She raised her eyebrows at him at the same time that Bruce, who had been sleeping on the couch in the far side of the room, perked his head up to sniff him. He had grown used to Flix, and Penny could tell that her pokemon all liked her partner.
Getting up, Bruce walked over to Flix and pawed at his foot, opening his mouth for a bite of some sort of treat. "Don't you dare give him pizza again, he didn't stop farting for a week, the last time." Penny warned, not even looking up from her work now. She just knew these things. Bruce whined and jumped up, putting his paws on Flix's chest, giving him big old puppy dog eyes, before lowering himself back down and going back to his couch of solace.
"Thanks for the snacks." She grabbed a box of milk duds and poured them all into her mouth, letting them heat up and melt in the saliva she accumulated just thinking about the sweet treats. "Your screen is that one right there... I'm almost done tape 36, so you can start at.... 50? I think we should be caught up after that..." She paused the video feed to look everything over on her notes.
"There's a tape missing, so I was thinking once we look through all these we can go down to the shop and ask if they actually have it, if there's nothing on these ones." Penelope leaned back and looked over her shoulder at him. "I have a bit of a hunch as to what happened, but we still need to look through everything to make sure I'm right." Penny placed the notepad down and stood up, stretching out again.
"I could use some coffee." She mumbled softly, before grabbing a bag of the instant brand and setting up the kettle to boil some water. "I've been here since seven, just trying to get the work done so we can get out early."
When Bruce came waddling over to beg for food, Flix was just about to drop a slice into the canine's mouth before Penny raised her voice - to which Flix obediently put it back down into the box. Frowning down to Bruce, he whispered "don't worry bro, I'll sneak you one later" and winked at the dog, hoping Penny would be none the wiser. The man had a soft spot for pokemon and just adored feeding them, ignoring that poke food was better for them rather than people food... he would feed them both.
He glared over to his screen that Penny pointed at, to which he was supposed to start looking at videos. pushing his tape in, he started the tedious work.
"Why do we get stuck with the boring work." He whined, chewing on his slice of pizza while leaning his head on his hand, watching the screen he had with half interest. Nothing... Nothing. and oh look! more nothing.
Every now and then he would whine and groan, look over to Penny with beckoning eyes as if he was some kind of twelve year old kid who just couldn't sit still in church. Only about a half hour into his work, he began spinning on his chair and only giving his work half of his attention. "Should we go to lunch after this? Or or or, maybe go to the museum, I hear they have a new fossil exhibit." To anyone who calls him a man, they have no idea that he truly is a child stuck in a grown ass man's body.
"Do you think the cafeteria lady hates me? She didn't put that many pepperonis on the pizza this time... I wonder if I did something. Maybe I should bring her flowers..." He just couldn't stop! It was then, in mid spin that he noticed something strange on the video...
He finally stopped talking and spinning and slowed the video's frames with the little finger spin thing to control the speed... In a bust of excitement he pointed at the screen and nearly flew off his chair. "THERE, A FACE!" He pointed at a sketchy looking guy who had stuffed his pockets with jewels.
When he asked her to go to the museum to look at fossils, Penny nodded absently to him, tapping the pen against her lips while she looked her footage over. "Mm, that sounds nice, Flix. Let's do that." She soothed, speaking softly, but obviously her mind was somewhere else as she looked over the footage. One person kept walking by the display case... Every hour.
Penny blinked, listening to Flix whine and moan about how the cafeteria staff didn't like him, how she didn't put a lot of pepperoni on his pizza... Penelope's eye twitched, and she was about to whip around and tell him how important her job was to her, and how he should take all police work more seriously, when he stopped mid-spin and started screaming at the screen about a face.
Pausing her own screen on the man who kept walking by the cases, she rolled her chair back over to his and bumped him out of the way, hoping it would entertain him for the time being while she looked over the person he was seeing.
"I'm pretty sure I'm right, then." Penelope stood up and pointed to the screen. "That guy works there. I think they staged the robbery to claim insurance." Penny rolled her eyes and rubbed at her forehead. "Ridiculous. Why are people so stupid? They have cameras." She rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying not to stress over it.
"Anyway, let's head down there and grab the guy." Penelope pulled on her Ranger jacket and brushed it off, zippering it up to her sternum. "Then we can write the report and be done with work today."
Every time he spun around to see Penny and see what she was doing, he caught glimpses of what she was doing. The one tim she was tapping the pen against her lips and he caught himself staring for a wee bit too long, and once he realized he spun faster than the other and swallowed several times nervously, hoping that she was far too engrossed in her work to realize.
When she bumped him out of the way to see what he had found, he happily let the chair roll and spin away from the table, holding his chair with his hands to keep him steady while he smiled and sailed away.
"Alright then, lets go catch us a bad guy!" Leaping out from his chair, with his foot catching on the rounded rims at the bottom, he hopped his way out the door on one foot, excited for an arrest and to get out of that stuffy room. Penny was too distracted in the videos and it was too boring... too quiet. It gave him the heebie jeebies.
"You can write up the reports Commish~" he teased, remembering that she had mentioned wanting to become commissioner some day. "I'll go make supper~!" At this point he was marching his way down the halls. "Tomorrow is our day off isn't it? First weekend since we started, I won't know what to do with myself."
Penny raised her arms to the ceiling to stretch out a couple of kinks her in back, before bending down and touching her toes. She needed to limber up a bit if she was going to be chasing down any runners today; jewellery thieves always seemed to run, and she had found that out the hard way, straining a hammy on one of her solo missions during training.
"Mmm, I'm not sure if I'll go for commissioner, now." She mumbled, running her fingers through her hair to tie it up into a ponytail as she walked. "It might be nice, but at the same time, I wouldn't be able to be partners with you anymore." She reached out and patted his chest, giving him a thumbs up before opening the door to the outside world, taking in the sunshine.
"It's great that it's only 11, gives me basically the whole day... It's like having an extra day to my weekend off." Penelope waggled her eyebrows at him excitedly before bouncing down the stairs two at a time. If she was being honest, she really couldn't stop thinking about the fossil exhibit at the museum now. Or going there with Flix.
The mere thought, however subconscious it was, made her feet move swifter than usual on the way to the store, which was only a few blocks away. "Let's get this guy, and go to that museum." She pulled on her uniform gloves, making sure she had all her equipment on her for an arrest.
She was stretching. Dear lord. He had to turn his gaze onto elsewhere, somewhere, he began eyeballing the ficus in the far corner of the room, only sneakily sneaking peeks at her while she was doing some stretches. What was he thinking, of course she wouldn't be interested in a guy like him. Furrowing his brows, he frowned in a determined grimace to himself as though to talk himself up.
It's good enough that you two are friends. Don't push it bud.
However once they were ready to go out the door, she touched his chest and ran off. In his attempt to gallop after her, his knees buckled awkwardly and once again, he was fumbling his way after her. What a maroon really, he was certain his friends were watching form the window laughing too!
"Maybe not, but you can certainly boss me around!"
"ALRIGHT, MUSEUM!" With that new found courage he found his balance and began booking it down the street to the jewelry store, his long makes making it a piece of cake along with his training. He nearly busted down the door with a kick while looking for the owner who thought he was too good to be caught by the law.
Penny, although much shorter than her partner, was also spry and agile. It came with months and months of training to run, but when he practically galloped off, she was hot on his heels, trying not to pass him the few times. He was just so excited to be doing this... She hoped he could be promoted soon, so that he could delegate the boring tasks to his charges and he could be doing what he does best - which was apparently kicking in the doors to the shops.
Penny put her arm out to bar him from getting ahead of her, before stepping into the store, walking quietly up to the counter and raising her eyebrows. It didn't take much for men to admit their guilt to her, even when she wasn't working. She just had that look that hit them right in the soul.
Within seconds, the owner was sweating and trying to apologize, making excuses about his wife and family. Penny shook her head and pulled out her cuffs, wrapping them around his wrists. She didn't even have to say a word to him, he just sobbed to her as she pushed him out of the store and into a car that was awaiting the man to take him back to HQ.
"That was easier than I thought." Penny put her hands on her hips as she watched the car drive off, holding up her fist for him to bump. "Good job, Flix. Thanks for spotting them on the camera... The owner gave the location of the other employee that was involved, so the team in Azalea is going to handle it." She looked up to him and gave him a smile.
When they walked in, Flix had half a mind to go over there and just leap on the counter and yell out for the people involved - but Penny was there to keep him on a leash and walked in to do all the business with class. Which he had none of. He just sat back and watched it all go down. Poor owner guy though, it was certainly a good thing Penny was here to deal with it because Flix barely had a heart for stuff like this. A crying man, a sob story, it nearly gets him every time!
Once the criminals were gone and driven off, he was happy to give her a fist bump and even made it explode at the end, wriggling his fingers for dramatic effect.
"oooh yes! C'mon, I wanna see the new fossils, they come from Unova, it's a long way to travel." Of course he had already read up on the thing just a bit, who found it and what not, all those boring juicy bits. Withdrawing himself from grabbing her hand to lead her quickly over to the museum, he patiently just walked at her side instead.
"He did have some pretty jewels in there, I had half the mind to buy myself new earrings." he admitted, all those shiny things and rocks and what not, too bad they were crazy expensive and his wallet would weep tears of actual sorrow if he had purchased anything not edible.
Penny grinned as his fingers made an explosion, before mimicking him in the motion. She had forgot about that little part at the end. The explosion made it the best part. "You read up on it all, then?" She laughed at him as she walked, wondering why he had reached out randomly before retracting his hand. Was he going to grab hers? She blushed and tucked them into her pockets gently, before glancing around at the street around them.
"Mmm, they did have some nice stuff in there. My mom had a pair of pearl earrings from there, actually." She smiled at the memory, before shrugging her shoulders. "Dad probably has them somewhere at the ma-" She paused. "House." Penny had almost blabbered about the Reed manor, which would squander her hard work. She didn't want anyone but the commissioner to know about any of that...
If Flix went digging about her, though, there was no stopping him from discovering all the police files on her mother's murder, how the little Reed girl was found at the scene, terrified and alone and clinging to the lifeless body.
Penny shook the look of concentration from her face, trying to forget what she had been thinking about. "Why don't we pick up a couple of pamphlets to read later?" Penny tilted her head at him. "I mean, the ones that you don't already have. Perhaps they have a couple of books there to purchase..." She raised her index finger to her chin, tapping her knuckle against her lips.
"I've been looking for some new books, it'd be nice if they weren't just the usual stuff I've been reading..." She mumbled, thinking about the dozens of romance novels she had gone through in the past few months. What could she say? She was feeling... romantic.
His whole internal self crumbled at what he had witnessed after his stupid goof. She retracted her hand into her pocket, she had saw what had happened, that he had almost broken the friend barrier and now he was in a total spiral downwards! Despite the smile he still had on his face, internally he was yelling. There it goes, away with the wind and into neverland; things will never be okay again.
He was so panicked internally that he didn't even hear her slip up about a ma-house. And honestly, even if he did hear, he was a man who would totally understand privacy in certain matters, there was no need for him to pry into things people didn't tell him personally. So long as they did no harm.
"oh a new book would be nice~ I wonder if they found anything interesting about this new species, once they had revived it and all of course." It was a shame there were no fire fossil pokemon found yet, the closest thing to one would be Magcargo he guessed due to the typing, but even then it wasn't same. Oh well, maybe someday some kind of fire raptor thing would exist. Kinda like Cranidos, that would be cool.
"Hm? Whats your usual thing you read generally?" Still his voice inside his head was screaming bloody murder on how dumb of a face he was for that previous blunder.
Penny nodded her head in a wise way, as thought what he was saying about the fossil type pokemon was so true and old-age knowledge. She let her hand drop back down, free of her pocket, before glancing over to him,
"You are so right, I hate how there are no fire fossil types." Penny frowned a bit at the thought. She wondered why for a moment. "Maybe there's a reason, though. Maybe fire types weren't even needed or even existed back then." Penny mumbled, moreso to herself. Now she was curious. How did the evolution of fire types come to be?
"Mm!" She jolted as she went to take another step, but instead found her foot catching a small step in the middle of the street, teetering forward. She grabbed onto the closest thing she could find - Flix's hand - to steady herself, before breathing out, relieved.
"Damnit, who puts a random step in the middle of the sidewalk?!" She frowned and pointed to it with her free hand, still having a grip on Flix's hand as she kept on walking. "Seriously... How stupid can you be..." She continued walking for a few seconds before letting go of his hand and sighing loudly.
"Oh. I have a lot of... comedy novels. And, uh. Romance." She let the last one slip by quiet, before rolling her eyes. "Y'know. Books that get turned into chick flicks, basically. They're a quick and easy read." She shrugged her shoulders.
Hmm... he had to take a legitimate moment to think about her hypothesis on the matter of no fire type fossils. It's quite possible that they weren't needed back then... but then again he reminded himself of how awesome fire types were and how boring it would be without some charizard like creature with a sturdy rock like body spiting fire at the top of a volcano during the jurassic era. Nah, that was too cool for it not to be a thing.
Maybe-- he was cut off by her jerking around randomly, surprising him and even more so when her soft hang took his. He just couldn't feel his heart anymore, it was gone. Just ZOOP beamed up like Scottie and was gone. Internally he screamed even louder, more obnoxious, and more like a crazed fool than a saddened one.
Then it all sank in once the shock was gone. Are you okay? Is your ankle fine?! Should I bring you to a pokemon center or something to get it checked out? He leaned over to take a better look at it, completely forgetting their previous conversation even if she was trying to continue it.
he was even 100% ready to go ahead and carry her over to a pokemon center if he had to, screw the museum if that thing was going to ruin her time! Plus, his partner was in trouble, he had to do all it took for her to be okay in the end. Who else would come save him on a lazy no tent day from the rain and cuddle with him?
Once the pain actually set in and she could really feel the effects of what was happening to her ankle, she looked down at it and tried to put some weight on it, wincing. "... Awh, damnit." She frowned and tried again, nearly winding up on her face. "Yeah, no. I should proably get this checked out." She lifted her leg and balanced on the one she had on the ground, tugging down her sock to check out her ankle.
It was already turning a dark shade of purple.
"... Arceus doesn't want me to have fun, it's been decided." She feined being exasperated, head falling back as if her life was over, before grumbling and pulling her sock back up. "Here, help me get my shoe off." She untied the laces and pulled the boot off her foot, tossing it on the ground.
"I should be able to walk to the center, now." She gave him a thumbs up and went to move again, the pain shooting up her leg and making her freeeze in her spot, before slowly careening over.
"This is the end, this is it for me." She stared up to the sky. "Going out with a broken ankle, oh cruel world..." She griped loudly, obnoxiously to the rest of the street, some people stopping to watch her little spectacle before she waved them off.
"I hurt my ankle! Go away! Nothing to see!" She laughed at herself, before looking at Flix. "Well, looks like you're going to have to carry me to the center, partner."
